Nox: your
new mini-cd flesh for the devil is fantastic!each song has its own personality
but in a sense its almost a musical regression back to the early days
of 80's death and black metal.why the sudden change in sound.
Jim:
I dont think its a change in sound, but a different studio and better
production. This is my first recording with SATHANAS on drums and we also
have a rythum guitarist on this one. We're just sticking to our roots
(CELTIC FROST, BATHORY, VENOM, ETC.).
Nox: you
once played drums in the mighty acheron what is your musical background
and why did you leave?other than sathanas and acheron what other bands
have you played with .i know your still in contact with vincent will we
see any acheron/sathanas shows in the future?can you name a few of your
influences.what
drove you to become the battery that propels sathanas?
Jim: I started playing drums when I was 13 after
seeing MOTLEY CRUE open for OZZY. Tommy Lee blew my mind. Shortly afterwards
a friend of mine turned me on to METALLICA and that opened a whole new
world to me. After high school I was playing in a cover band playing stuff
like METALLICA, SAVATAGE, MEGADETH and a lot of other 80's METAL stuff.
I had started listening to VENOM, BATHORY, DEATH, SLAYER and anything
in Death Metal that I could get my hands on. Shortly after that is when
I met Vincent Crowley. It's funny that I didn't run into him sooner since
he lived right down the street from me. He turned me on to all the underground
demo tapes that were being traded at the time (1989). We clicked right
off the bat. He decided to relocate to Florida a few years later, but
I was not ready to make that kind of move at the time. He was pretty dissapointed
at the time but we've kept in touch over the years and he's been like
a brother. As far as a CHERON/SATHANAS tour goes. It sure sounds like
a great idea, but It would have to be set up right. My influences are
DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH, LED ZEPPELIN, and KISS in my very young days
(5-10 years old) My uncles always had good tunes to listen to as a kid.
Then i got into JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN, and OZZY in my pre-teen days.
Then I got into Thrash and Death METAL in my high school years. I
am now in SATHANAS because Vincent told me they needed a drummer. Since
I knew them from the old days Paul had no problem giving me the job.
Nox:
with song titles like flesh for the devil i kind of figured you guys werent
a christian rock band.your
former band member (in acheron)vincent was once a high priest in the church
of satan.are any sathanas members practicing occultists or church of satan
members or are you just into the satanic image because it fits
the brutality of your music?
Jim:
I cant speak for anyone but myself. I'm not a practicing Satanist or trying
to jump on the bandwagon. I've been playing this stuff for years. If I
could classify myself as anything it would be an athiest.I agree with
the satanic laws in the satanic bible so playing with SATHANAS and ACHERON
previously never was a problem with me. Organized religions are a joke
and most of the people who say they are loyal to their flock are
hypocrytes. Just look at all of those priest's who were fucking little
boys in the ass. They should have their dicks chopped off and shoved down
their fucking throats.
Nox: if so
what are your personal satanic beliefs laveyan, pagan?i am an occultist
myself and heavily
into ceremonial magick and satanism.what do you think of satanic bands
who use lavey for credibility but are
all image?
Jim:
I live for myself and set my own rules. I definitely dont turn the other
cheek. I'll fuck you up with any means necessary. I think people who practice
satanism and play death metal can spot a phony.
Nox: .jim
you are a recent addition to sathanas and certainly an asset but that
drum stool has been filled, vacated, then refilled many times, will your
stay be permanent?
Jim: I'm not going anywhere. These guys are definitely
the coolest motherfuckers to work with. I wish it would have happened
sooner. We will have plenty of material for the future.
Nox:
your music is truly inspired and darkly satanic, the way true black/death
fans like it .what can we expect
from the upcoming hex nefarious cd?will your next serenade to satan be
your magnum opus?
Jim:
Hex Nefarious has been recorded for more than 2 years. The label is waiting
for some video footage to add to it. We hope for all of the future recordings
to kick ass. We want to stay consistent. If one recording shadows the
other then people tend to say "Oh. I remember when these guys kicked
ass, now they went soft" You know, shit like that.
Nox: pope
john paul is finally buried(rot in hell!)and the catholic church has been
on the ropes but a new pope has already been picked.the public can expect
a new generation of pedophilic priests and moral and mental brainwashing
from the soon to be revitalized church.what do you think can be done to
free the minds of the masses from the enslavement of christianity?
Jim:
Unfortunately we are outnumbered. All we can do is keep doing what we've
been doing for all these years. If people cant think for themselves then
they've got the problem.
Nox: your
last two releases are radically diffrent from each other in sound and
style why such musical
diversity from cd to cd?is it a change of lineup or something else?
Jim: I think it's the line-up change on drums. I
think I bring a more old-school style to the band and appreciate the music
a lot more. Paul likes to try some new things as well. He has a lot of
great guitar riffs. We all add our input on the songs. We all listen to
each other. Thats how a band is suppossed to work. Thers no ego or bullshit
with these guys.
Nox:
musically you guys are brutal and crude.not exactly all slicked up like
these modern black metal posers
with there 100,000 dollar recording budgets who dress up like gothic cenobites
on the front covers of major
metal publications.what chance do you think sathanas has in such a market
of reaching a larger audience and
getting signed to a legitimate independent major?or do you even care?
Jim:
Our main fanbase is in Europe. Sure, if someone from a major label gave
us a huge recoding budget and producer who's been there done that gave
us a shot we could sound better and get exposure to a larger
audience we would jump all over it (Who wouldn't?) Unfortunately the chances
are slim. We're not going to dress up and play poser. What you see is
what you get. And what you hear is as good as it gets. All we want to
do
is play music and shows without all the trappings of people who think
they know whats best for the band. If I wanted to make big money I wouldn't
be doing this. Money can't buy happiness. Getting signed to a bigger label
isn't that big of a deal but it would be nice.
